Traralgon sits in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria's Gippsland region, about 163 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is the largest city in the valley, and the easiest place in the area to reach by both road and rail.
Driving from Melbourne
Head east out of Melbourne on the Princes Freeway (M1) and stay on it through Pakenham, Warragul, Moe and Morwell. Traralgon is the next city along. It is a freeway or dual-carriageway run almost the whole way, and the trip takes roughly two hours in normal traffic — longer on a Friday afternoon heading out of town, or on a Sunday afternoon heading back.
Coming from the east or from the Gippsland Lakes, the Princes Highway (A1) runs in from Sale and Bairnsdale.
By train
Traralgon is on V/Line's Gippsland line, which runs from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne through Pakenham, Moe and Morwell. Traralgon station is a short walk from the Franklin Street shops, so arriving by train and getting around the town centre on foot is realistic.

By air
Latrobe Regional Airport sits between Traralgon and Morwell, but it mainly handles general aviation, charter and training flights rather than scheduled passenger services. Most visitors flying in arrive at Melbourne Airport or Avalon and drive or take the train from there.
Parking and getting around
Parking in the Traralgon town centre is mostly free time-limited street parking, with larger car parks behind the Franklin Street and Seymour Street shops and at the shopping centre. The centre is flat and compact enough to walk around comfortably once you have parked.

The Latrobe Valley gets cold, foggy winter mornings and warm, dry summers. Check the current forecast with the Bureau of Meteorology before you travel, particularly in winter when valley fog can slow the drive along the M1.
