Traralgon sits in the Latrobe Valley in Victoria's Gippsland region, about 163 kilometres south-east of Melbourne. It is the largest city in the valley, and the easiest place in the area to reach by both road and rail.
Driving from Melbourne
Head east out of Melbourne on the Princes Freeway (M1) and stay on it through Pakenham, Warragul, Moe and Morwell. Traralgon is the next city along. It is a freeway or dual-carriageway run almost the whole way, and the trip takes roughly two hours in normal traffic — longer on a Friday afternoon heading out of town, or on a Sunday afternoon heading back.
Coming from the east or from the Gippsland Lakes, the Princes Highway (A1) runs in from Sale and Bairnsdale.
By train
Traralgon is on V/Line's Gippsland line, which runs from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne through Pakenham, Moe and Morwell. Traralgon station is a short walk from the Franklin Street shops, so arriving by train and getting around the town centre on foot is realistic.
The trip from Southern Cross takes about two and a half hours, with trains roughly every 40 minutes through the day. Most are Traralgon trains, which end here; a few a day run on to Sale and Bairnsdale. The station was rebuilt in the Gippsland Line Upgrade, with an overpass and lifts between the platforms.

By air
Latrobe Regional Airport sits between Traralgon and Morwell, but it mainly handles general aviation, charter and training flights rather than scheduled passenger services. Most visitors flying in arrive at Melbourne Airport or Avalon and drive or take the train from there.
- Melbourne Airport (Tullamarine): about 190 km, roughly two and a half hours by car via CityLink, which is a toll road.
- Avalon Airport: about 220 km, roughly three hours by car.
Parking and getting around
Parking in the Traralgon town centre is mostly free time-limited street parking, with larger car parks behind the Franklin Street and Seymour Street shops and at the shopping centre. The centre is flat and compact enough to walk around comfortably once you have parked.
Local buses are run by Latrobe Valley Bus Lines: town routes around Traralgon, services to Morwell, Moe and Churchill, and coaches to Sale and Yarram. Fares are paid with myki.
